Ontario company struggling to fill 200 trades jobs

Trenergy is a fabrication plant in southern Ontario who have been struggling to fill a labour shortage of around 200 workers. Workers at Trenergy make between $22 to $28 an hour plus benefits. Company President Victor Oreskovich has stated that he can’t find enough skilled tradespeople - welders in particular.

Government of Canada Takes Action to Help Apprentices and Promote the Skilled Trades

The Honourable Jason Kenney (Minister of Employment and Social Development) details the importance and ongoing commitment from the Government of Canada to support the skilled trades. Kenney announced that the Government of Canada is mandating companies that bid on construction and maintenance projects to commit to hire and train apprentices. Also included in the article are some quick facts such as Canadian construction companies will need approximately 300,000 new workers over the next 10 years.

Government of Canada Takes Action to Help Apprentices and Promote the Skilled Trades

Skills Canada is encouraging the next generation of workers to look in the skilled trades and technologies field. They hosted 1,900 students across Ontario in a head-to-head competition in a number of skilled trades. This event took place at RIM Park in Waterloo Ontario.

2014 Budget Encouraging for Workers: Dillon

The budget towards public infrastructure projects over the next 10 years has been announced at over $130 billion dollars. Patrick Dillion (Business Manager of the Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario) states that the investments supports around 110,000 jobs annually in Ontario's construction industry.

Union Gas encourages aboriginal youth to pursue skilled trades

Union Gas has donated $20,000 through a grant to Skills Canada to encourage Aboriginal youth to pursue the skilled trades as a career. The goal of the program is to inspire Aboriginal youth to look into skilled trades as a career path as there is a demand for workers. Initiatives include summer camps, hands-on workshops and the the Ontario Technological Skills Competition.
